Do I Need Planning Permission for a Timber Gate in Ireland?

If you're thinking about installing a timber gate at your home or property, you might be wondering “Do I need planning permission?”

The short answer?

In most cases, no — but there are some exceptions.

At Grogan Timber Products, we’ve helped hundreds of customers across Ireland choose and install wooden driveway gates, side gates, and farm entrances, and we’re often asked about planning rules. This guide breaks it all down clearly so you can move forward with confidence.

When You Don’t Need Planning Permission

In most residential cases, you can install a timber gate without planning permission if:

  • It’s replacing an existing gate of similar size

  • It’s being installed behind your property’s front boundary line

  • The gate is not higher than 1.2 metres (front) or 2 metres (side/rear)

  • The gate doesn’t block access to a public road or footpath

  • It’s being installed as part of routine boundary improvements

When You Might Need Permission

You may need to contact your local planning office if:

  • Your gate is higher than 1.2m (front boundary)

  • You live near a protected structure or heritage site

  • Your gate will open outwards onto a public footpath or road

  • You’re in a new housing development with specific restrictions

  • It’s a new access point where none existed before

What’s Different for Timber Gates?

Unlike masonry walls or electric gates with pillars, timber gates are usually classed as temporary structures — especially if installed using timber posts and surface hardware. This makes them more likely to be considered exempt development under Irish planning law. Still local authorities may differ, so it’s always worth checking — especially in built-up or rural fringe areas.
